Press Freedoms Plummet to 50-Year Low, Urgent Report Reveals

URGENT UPDATE: Press freedoms worldwide have plunged to their lowest levels in 50 years, according to a startling new report from the Stockholm-based International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA). Released Thursday, the study reveals a shocking decline in press rights across the globe, with 54 percent of countries experiencing a drop in key democracy indicators since 2019.
This alarming trend is underscored by significant declines in countries like Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, and Myanmar, which have long been notorious for their poor press freedoms. South Korea, too, has reported a striking fall, triggered by a surge in defamation cases against journalists and government-led raids on media professionals.
IDEA Secretary General Kevin Casas-Zamora stated, “The most important finding in our report is the very acute deterioration in press freedom around the world.” He elaborated that this decline constitutes the “biggest drop over the past 50 years,” indicating a severe crisis in democratic health globally.
The report sheds light on the alarming reality that 43 countries across all continents have seen press freedoms wane, including 15 in Africa and 15 in Europe. The findings highlight a “toxic brew” of government overreach and the detrimental effects of disinformation campaigns, which are both real and exploited by governments as a pretext to suppress journalistic integrity.
Casas-Zamora cautioned that traditional media is increasingly consolidating, while local media outlets—crucial for facilitating democratic discourse—are disappearing in many regions. The report focuses on the period from 2019 to 2024 but does not yet account for the implications of Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025, which could further jeopardize global democracy.
With a pressing concern for the future of press freedoms, Casas-Zamora remarked, “Since what happens in the US has this ability to go global, this does not bode well for democracy globally.”
As this crisis unfolds, the implications are profound, affecting not only journalists and their ability to report but also the public’s access to critical information. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated—immediate action is necessary to safeguard press freedoms and democratic values worldwide.
