Candidates Prioritize Affordability and Infrastructure in Edmonton Ward

The upcoming city council election in Ward Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi has brought affordability and infrastructure to the forefront of discussions among candidates. This ward, which comprises a blend of the former wards 9 and 10, has a population estimated at 83,752. According to Edmonton Elections, there are approximately 45,386 eligible voters in the area. The ward stretches from 34 Avenue NW to Highway 19 on the south, and features a diverse community with various needs.

Incumbent Jennifer Rice is seeking re-election and emphasizes the need for well-planned infrastructure. She has noted the importance of expanding south Edmonton’s road network and enhancing community amenities while maintaining the character of neighborhoods. “Taxes have been increasing faster than people’s incomes, which is not sustainable,” Rice stated. He stresses the need for accountable leadership and efficient decision-making. “Residents are frustrated with how construction is managed, from delays and disruptions to the lack of clear communication about timelines,” he said. Rheubottom’s platform focuses on responsible planning and improving transit connectivity.

Lastly, Funke Olokude, who has 15 years of experience in addressing family issues such as housing and health, aims to bridge the gap between residents and decision-makers. She believes that city council is not adequately supporting Edmontonians in their efforts to make ends meet, highlighting affordability, economic growth, and community safety as key pillars of her campaign.

The name Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi, derived from the Blackfoot language, refers to traditional bison calving grounds, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the area. As the candidates prepare for the 2025 city council election, their diverse backgrounds and approaches signal a competitive race focused on the pressing needs of Ward Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi residents.
