UPDATE: A deadly shooting in Burnaby has left one man dead, triggering an urgent homicide investigation. The incident occurred just before 5:30 p.m. on September 10, 2023, in the 4400 block of Still Creek Drive, a busy area filled with restaurants and shops.

Witnesses reported multiple gunshots during the dinner hour, as families dined nearby. When Burnaby RCMP officers arrived, they found a male victim already deceased. Homicide investigators immediately began combing the scene for evidence, setting up a white tent in the parking lot of a nearby McDonald’s, typically bustling with diners and drive-thru customers.

In a developing situation, a black Mercedes SUV with its license plate obscured was noted at the scene. Just 15 minutes after the shooting, officers responded to a vehicle fire in South Burnaby, near Nursery Street and Lakefield Drive. Authorities are now investigating whether this fire is connected to the shooting incident.

“It is very early in the investigation; however, it is believed this may be a targeted event,” said an RCMP spokesperson. They assured the community that there are no further risks to public safety.

BC Emergency Health Services confirmed that paramedics arrived on-site, but no patients were transported to the hospital. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the case, indicating they will be on scene throughout Thursday to gather evidence and speak with nearby businesses.

IHIT officials are urging anyone with information or dash-cam video from the area between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on the day of the shooting to come forward. They can be contacted at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or via email at [email protected].

As this investigation unfolds, the community is left reeling from the shocking violence that erupted in a normally safe and busy area. Stay tuned for updates on this ongoing investigation.
