oneworld Celebrates 25 Years with New Member Oman Air
In 2024, the oneworld airline alliance marked its 25th anniversary, reflecting on a remarkable journey since its inception in 1999. Originally formed by American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and the now-defunct Canadian International, the alliance has grown to encompass 15 member airlines and over 20 affiliates. This extensive network connects more than 1,000 cities across 170 countries, allowing passengers to check in once, transfer luggage seamlessly, and enjoy a unified travel experience.
The scale of operations is impressive, with around 13,000 flights taking off or landing daily—equating to one flight every six seconds. Behind this vast operation are approximately 360,000 employees who ensure smooth travel experiences, reinforcing the alliance’s commitment to making air travel more convenient.
Growth and Expansion Over the Years
Since its formal establishment in 1999, oneworld has seen substantial growth. The alliance carried over 535 million passengers in 2018 alone, a figure that represents a threefold increase from its inaugural year. Since launch, nearly seven billion passengers have flown on oneworld airlines, a number that nearly matches the global population today.
On June 30, 2025, Oman Air officially became the alliance’s newest member, enhancing oneworld’s presence in the Middle East. As the flag carrier of Oman, the airline offers new opportunities for global travelers. Nat Pieper, CEO of oneworld, expressed pride in welcoming Oman Air to the family, highlighting the airline’s strategic reach and award-winning service.
Oman Air operates from its hub at Muscat International Airport (MCT) and serves 42 destinations across 22 countries. Known for its exceptional in-flight hospitality, the airline has received numerous accolades, including the Apex 2025 Awards for Best Food & Beverage and Best Cabin Service in the Middle East. As a full member of oneworld, Oman Air’s loyalty program members can now enjoy benefits such as earning and redeeming miles, priority boarding, and access to nearly 700 premium airport lounges worldwide.
Innovative Services and Customer Benefits
The evolution of oneworld from a five-member alliance to a global leader has been marked by innovative strategies aimed at enhancing the travel experience. In its early years, the alliance introduced the Visit Europe pass, expanding its service offerings. Over time, more airlines joined, including Finnair and Iberia in 1999, and Japan Airlines and Royal Jordanian in 2007.
In 2001, oneworld launched regional passes for various continents, including Visit Africa and Visit Asia, further extending its reach. The tragic events of September 11, 2001, shifted focus towards survival, prompting member airlines to unite in reducing costs and restoring revenues.
The alliance later introduced the Businessflyer program in 2003, targeting small and medium-sized businesses, and saw significant participation, with around 8,000 businesses enrolling. Today, approximately 225 million individuals belong to frequent flyer programs across oneworld airlines, allowing them to accrue miles that can be redeemed globally.
In 2018, oneworld launched oneworld Connect, a flexible membership structure allowing airlines that may not qualify for full membership to partner with the alliance. Fiji Airways became the first connect partner, enhancing coverage in the South Pacific. As the alliance continues to evolve, it has partnered with over 20 affiliate airlines, expanding its global footprint.
The alliance’s commitment to improving customer experience has resulted in over 650 lounges worldwide, offering amenities that cater to frequent flyers. Benefits for top-tier members include access to exclusive lounges, priority security lanes, and additional baggage allowances.
In summary, oneworld celebrates its 25th anniversary as a major player in the airline industry, continuously adapting to the needs of travelers. With the addition of Oman Air, the alliance strengthens its position and reaffirms its dedication to providing exceptional service and connectivity for its passengers.
