Sault Theatre Workshop Reduces Deficit, Seeks New Director NOW

URGENT UPDATE: The Sault Theatre Workshop (STW) is taking significant steps to address its financial woes, reducing its deficit and actively searching for a new director as it navigates a challenging recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. With only one show planned in the next three months, the group is under pressure to stabilize its situation quickly.

During the annual general meeting on September 9, 2023, president Bobbi Gasparelli announced that STW is currently chipping away at a deficit of approximately $10,000 caused by canceled performances during the pandemic. “While still on shaky ground financially, we are reducing our deficit,” Gasparelli stated, highlighting the urgency of their fundraising efforts.

The community theatre, established in 1948, is preparing for its upcoming fall productions, including an original work titled She, focused on domestic violence, and The Cabinet, presented by Unfathomable Horrors, at the Studio Theatre on Pittsburg Avenue. However, a crucial pantomime scheduled for December is still in need of a confirmed director before the board’s next meeting on October 7.

STW faced a financial crunch during the pandemic, with shows canceled and expenses mounting. The group’s financial report indicates a loss of just over $2,600 in the past fiscal year, an improvement from previous losses. Sandra Houston, who delivered the financial update, emphasized the need for a “steady diet of fundraisers” to boost income, as ticket sales alone are insufficient to maintain operations.

Gasparelli noted that the theatre’s capacity of just 100 seats limits revenue potential, stating, “We cannot survive on ticket sales alone.” The board is now responsible for fundraising efforts, as no volunteers stepped forward to lead a dedicated fundraising committee. Plans are underway for an art show on October 18 and a concert by The Floor Between Us in November to help generate additional funds.

Despite the challenges, STW has chosen not to release a lineup for its 2025-26 season. Gasparelli expressed caution in making promises, stating, “We want to be on a more stable financial ground. We just don’t feel confident enough yet.”

An important decision made earlier this summer involved keeping the theatre’s building, which has been their home for 27 years. Gasparelli remarked, “If we really can’t pay our bills, that’s the point where we have no choice,” indicating that selling the property would be a last resort.

As the organization looks to the future, some board positions remain unfilled. Harry Houston resigned as artistic director in June, and Gasparelli confirmed that the board will take on the responsibility of selecting scripts and directors moving forward. Additionally, treasurer Scarlett Marenger plans to step down once a successor is found, with no immediate candidates expressing interest.

As the Sault Theatre Workshop works towards financial recovery, the installation of a rental furnace at the Studio Theatre is expected this fall, addressing operational needs as winter approaches. The group is also seeking partnerships for snow removal services to alleviate costs incurred last winter.

With veteran members like Harry and Sandra Houston and newer volunteers stepping up, the community theatre is rallying to ensure its survival.
