Delaware Secures Historic 44-41 OT Win Over UConn in FBS Debut

UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, the University of Delaware achieved a historic milestone with a 44-41 overtime victory against UConn on September 23, 2023. This marks the Fightin’ Blue Hens’ first win as a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team over another FBS opponent.
Nick Minicucci delivered the decisive moment, rushing for a 13-yard touchdown in overtime after UConn could only manage a field goal on their possession, despite having a first down at the Delaware 2-yard line. This victory comes as a significant boost for Delaware, who is competing in their inaugural FBS season.
The excitement escalated when Nate Reed successfully kicked a 43-yard field goal for Delaware as time expired in regulation, tying the game at 41. This crucial kick followed a missed fourth-and-2 conversion by UConn, allowing Delaware to regain possession and set up the game-winning drive.
Both teams showcased impressive offensive performances, combining for a staggering 1,033 total yards in the game. Minicucci completed 23 of 34 passes for 265 yards, including a touchdown to Kyre Duplessis, who achieved a career-high with nine receptions for 161 yards. Additionally, Jo Silver made a significant contribution with 179 rushing yards on 15 carries, scoring two touchdowns.
For UConn, Joe Fagnano completed 28 of 38 passes for 346 yards and two touchdown passes. Running back Cam Edwards added 116 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
The back-and-forth battle kept fans on the edge of their seats, with Delaware briefly taking a 24-21 lead in the second quarter. UConn responded, reclaiming a 38-35 lead with a touchdown pass from Fagnano to Alex Honig.
This game was particularly noteworthy as it marked the first time Delaware hosted an FBS team in their stadium since 1989, making the victory even more significant for fans and players alike.
