Riders Clinch Playoff Spot but Suffer Devastating 48-31 Loss
UPDATE: The Saskatchewan Riders have officially clinched a playoff berth but faced a crushing setback with a 48-31 blowout loss to the Montreal Alouettes on September 23, 2023. This defeat comes just as the Riders aimed to secure a coveted home playoff game.
Before the game kicked off at Mosaic Stadium, the Riders celebrated their playoff spot thanks to losses by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Edmonton Elks earlier this weekend. However, the atmosphere quickly shifted as the Alouettes struck first with a 52-yard field goal from Jose Maltos Diaz, setting the tone for a challenging night ahead.
The Riders responded with a 46-yard field goal from Brett Lauther, tying the game at 3-3. But it wasn’t long before Montreal’s Mcleod Bethel-Thompson connected with a wide-open Tyson Philpot for a stunning 59-yard touchdown, putting the Alouettes in the lead and igniting their momentum.
A series of turnovers plagued the Riders, including an interception by Trevor Harris that was overturned due to pass interference. Just moments later, Montreal capitalized on a fumble by Tommy Stevens, extending their lead to 14 points with a one-yard touchdown run from Shea Patterson.
As the first half wound down, the Riders managed to find some life when Harris threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to KeeSean Johnson, bringing the score to 21-10. However, just before halftime, Philpot scored again, this time on a 16-yard touchdown, leaving Saskatchewan trailing 28-10 at the break.
The second half saw little improvement for the Riders as they struggled to keep pace. Although they narrowed the gap with a touchdown run by Tommy Stevens, Montreal’s Philpot continued to dominate. A spectacular 77-yard catch and run by Philpot, coupled with a penalty, set the stage for another Alouettes touchdown.
Despite a valiant effort from the Riders, including a one-yard sneak from AJ Ouellette, they could not contain Montreal’s relentless offense. A fumble recovery in the end zone by Donald Ventrelli sealed the Riders’ fate, leading to an overwhelming defeat.
With this loss, the Riders will have to regroup during their bye week before facing the Edmonton Elks on September 27. The urgency surrounding their next game amplifies as they look to bounce back from this disappointing performance and solidify their playoff aspirations.
Fans are left reeling from a night marred by turnovers and defensive struggles, questioning what lies ahead for the Riders as they aim to reclaim their momentum. This game serves as a wake-up call, highlighting the need for significant improvements before the playoffs commence.
