Android to Introduce Live Video Emergency Feature Similar to iPhone

Android users may soon benefit from an advanced safety feature similar to Apple’s Emergency SOS Live Video. According to findings by Android Authority, Google is reportedly developing a functionality that would enable users to share live video with emergency services, enhancing the existing safety tools available on devices like the Pixel phone.
Current Safety Features on Pixel Phones
Currently, Google’s Pixel phones come equipped with several safety features, including Car Crash Detection and Safety Check. One existing tool allows users to record video footage for up to 45 minutes and send it to designated emergency contacts. However, this feature does not facilitate live streaming to emergency dispatchers, which limits its effectiveness in urgent situations.
In contrast, Apple’s Emergency SOS Live Video feature has been operational for years. This functionality allows users to stream real-time video to emergency dispatchers if requested, providing critical situational awareness that can guide first responders. The ability to assess the severity of emergencies, such as fires or medical crises, is significantly enhanced through live video feeds.
Potential New Developments in Emergency Features
The code discovered in the recent Google Play Services update (version 25.35.34 beta) indicates that Google is working on a tool to allow users to “share live video” directly with emergency services. This development suggests a shift towards more interactive and immediate forms of communication during emergencies. Unlike the current functionality, this new feature would not save video to the device, but would give dispatchers the option to record the stream if necessary.
Should this feature launch successfully, it represents a significant upgrade for Pixel owners and could potentially extend to a broader range of Android devices. Since Google Play Services is integral to most Android systems, it is conceivable that this live video sharing capability could become available on devices from various manufacturers, including Samsung and Motorola.
This advancement would mark a notable step for Google in expanding the safety features available to users across the Android ecosystem, potentially ensuring that more individuals have access to vital tools in emergencies. As technology continues to evolve, the integration of such features could fundamentally change how emergencies are handled, making it imperative for users to stay informed about these developments.
