UPDATE: The mayor of Essex, Sherry Bondy, is taking immediate action to enhance transparency regarding the town council’s closed-door meetings. During a council meeting scheduled for October 2, 2023, Bondy will present a notice of motion aimed at revising the agendas for these meetings, proposing that they provide more detailed information about the topics discussed without jeopardizing confidentiality.

Bondy stated, “I’ve been talking to the clerk for a while, saying, ‘Is this something we can review in our procedural bylaw?’” Her goal is clear: to foster a culture of openness while ensuring the municipality’s interests are protected. This initiative comes at a critical time, as residents increasingly demand accountability from their local leaders.

The proposals aim to address issues surrounding closed sessions that often deal with sensitive matters like land transactions and legal concerns. Bondy believes that the public deserves to know more about these discussions. “Maybe we can do more when we come out of closed and share more with the public,” she emphasized, highlighting her commitment to keeping residents informed.

In addition to enhancing transparency, Bondy is also mindful of potential complaints from the Ontario Ombudsman. “I want to make sure we’re addressing any potential complaints that we’re getting in the future,” she added, underscoring her proactive stance on governance.

Comparing Essex to neighboring communities, Bondy noted, “If you look at, for example, I peek at the Town of Amherstburg from time to time, there’s a whole lot of information there.” She aims to implement similar practices in Essex to ensure that residents feel informed and engaged.

While the motion will be presented on October 2, it is anticipated to be discussed in detail at the subsequent council meeting on October 6, 2023. Residents are encouraged to pay close attention to developments as Bondy’s efforts could pave the way for a more open dialogue between the council and the community.

As the conversation around transparency in governance grows, Bondy’s initiative highlights a critical shift in how local governments can operate. With the public’s trust on the line, the outcome of this motion could reshape the relationship between Essex’s council and its constituents. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
