Essex Mayor Demands Transparency in Closed Council Meetings

URGENT UPDATE: The Mayor of Essex, Sherry Bondy, is taking decisive action to increase transparency in the town council’s closed-door meetings. During a meeting scheduled for October 2, 2023, Bondy will present a notice of motion aimed at revising the agendas for these private sessions to include more information about the topics being discussed, while still safeguarding sensitive issues.
“Everyone knows my style; I want to be open and transparent, sharing as much information with the public as possible,” Bondy stated. The mayor emphasizes the public’s right to know about the matters discussed in closed sessions, which often include critical issues such as land transactions and legal affairs.
Why This Matters NOW: The push for transparency comes in response to ongoing concerns about public engagement and accountability in local governance. Bondy believes that by offering more details about closed-session discussions, the council can foster greater trust among residents. “There are things coming up where I’m like, ‘Pay attention here,’” she added, indicating her commitment to keeping the public informed.
The motion will not only be discussed on Monday but will also be brought forward for council consideration on October 6, 2023. Bondy has been in talks with the town clerk, advocating for a review of existing procedural bylaws to enhance public access to information.
She pointed out that municipalities often face complaints from the Ontario Ombudsman regarding transparency issues. “I want to make sure we’re addressing any potential complaints that we’re getting in the future,” Bondy remarked. Her proactive stance aims to minimize reasons for public discontent by providing the community with the information they seek.
Looking at other municipalities, Bondy highlighted examples like the Town of Amherstburg, which she believes set a benchmark for transparency. “It’s good to see what other towns are doing, and I just want to provide more information to the public,” she concluded.
As this situation develops, Essex residents are encouraged to follow the upcoming meetings closely. Bondy’s initiative could signal a significant shift in how local councils operate, potentially setting a precedent for other municipalities in Ontario.
