URGENT UPDATE: A WestJet flight from Calgary to Moncton has landed safely at the Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport after declaring an emergency due to a mechanical issue. The incident occurred on the evening of July 30, 2023, involving flight WS408, which carried 127 passengers and 6 crew members.

Officials from the airport reported that emergency services were alerted and on standby just moments before the aircraft’s scheduled landing. A mechanical abnormality was detected during the flight, prompting the crew to act swiftly. Emergency vehicles were positioned on the runway to ensure safety, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Moncton Fire Chief Conrad Landry confirmed that his department responded with an engine and tanker as a precautionary measure. They remained on standby, assisting airport firefighters until the flight landed without incident.

Riverview resident Mark Landry, who was onboard, shared that he remained largely unaware of the unfolding situation until the plane touched down. “There was no disruption at all on the flight,” he stated. “I saw the Facebook post just shortly before we were landing, and that was about it. The only difference was seeing emergency vehicles on the ground.”

Landry praised the crew for their professionalism in handling the emergency. He noted, “I think people on the ground were more worried than the people on the plane.” He expressed confidence in future flights, stating, “It doesn’t impact me at all. I’d jump on a plane tomorrow.”

Following the emergency landing, the aircraft was cleared for departure later that evening, after a brief delay.

This incident highlights the effectiveness of emergency protocols and the calmness of passengers during unexpected situations. As travelers continue to navigate flying in a post-pandemic world, stories like these remind us of the importance of safety and preparedness in aviation.
