Joliet District 86 Secures New Three-Year Teacher Contract
Joliet Public Schools District 86 has finalized a new three-year contract with its teachers’ union, significantly impacting the compensation structure for its educators. The District 86 Board of School Inspectors approved the agreement during a meeting on September 10, 2023, which is retroactive to the start of the current school year in August.
The contract, established with the Council #86 of the American Federation of Teachers-Local 604, guarantees an average wage increase of 12% over the three-year period for the district’s 768 teachers. For new teachers entering the district, the starting salary has been set at $51,676 for those holding a bachelor’s degree and having no prior experience.
Focus on Retaining Quality Educators
The approval of this contract is positioned as a strategic move to enhance the district’s ability to attract and retain skilled educators. In a statement following the board meeting, District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the dedication of the teaching staff. “Our dedicated teachers work tirelessly to ensure our students receive a high-quality education in a safe and caring environment,” she said.
The financial terms of the agreement reflect a broader effort to maintain competitiveness in the educational sector, especially as districts across the nation strive to counter challenges in teacher retention and recruitment.
Transitioning Leadership in District 86
As the district celebrates this significant achievement, it also prepares for a leadership transition. Dr. Rouse has announced her intention to step down from her role as superintendent when her contract concludes in June 2027. This upcoming change in leadership adds another layer of complexity to the district’s ongoing efforts to ensure stability and support for its educational staff.
The new contract marks a pivotal moment for Joliet Public Schools District 86, aligning financial resources with the district’s commitment to educational excellence and the well-being of both students and teachers.
