Urgent: Bear Attacks Couple in Home in Northern Ontario
UPDATE: A couple in Nipigon, Ontario is recovering after a terrifying bear attack inside their home on September 17, 2025. The incident unfolded late Tuesday evening when the bear entered their residence after the couple opened their back door to let their dog outside, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
As the bear charged into their home, it attacked both the residents and their dog, prompting the couple to flee to a bedroom, where they barricaded themselves and called for emergency assistance. Officials confirmed that the couple suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital, where they are expected to be released shortly.
In a dramatic turn of events, responding officers found not only the bear but also the couple’s dog—a 100-pound mutt mix—bravely barking from the basement to contain the bear’s movements. Police spokesperson Kimberly Rodak stated that the dog also sustained injuries but has since received stitches and is anticipated to make a full recovery.
To ensure public safety, the bear was killed by authorities following the attack. Police indicated that the use of lethal force was necessary due to the immediate threat posed by the bear.
This alarming incident highlights the increasing reports of bear sightings and encounters this fall, with officials urging residents to exercise caution. Although home intrusions by bears are rare, the OPP is advising individuals to call 911 if they find themselves in immediate danger due to wildlife. For non-emergency encounters, residents should utilize the Bear Wise reporting line established by the province’s Ministry of Natural Resources.
As this story develops, officials are reminding the public of the importance of awareness and preparedness in bear-populated areas. Stay tuned for further updates as authorities continue to monitor wildlife interactions in northern Ontario.
