Cloverdale United Church Marks Historic Milestones at Gala Dinner

Cloverdale United Church commemorated several significant milestones during a gala dinner held on September 13, 2023. Close to 100 attendees gathered to celebrate the church’s enduring legacy within the community. The event highlighted the upcoming achievements of 2025, which include the church’s 75th anniversary in its current building on 58A Avenue, the centenary of the United Church of Canada, and the 100th anniversary of Cloverdale United Church itself, formed from the merger of the Cloverdale Presbyterian Church and the Cloverdale Methodist Church. Additionally, the church is recognizing 150 years of mission and ministry in Cloverdale and Surrey, dating back to its roots established in 1875.
Ursula Maxwell-Lewis, a columnist for the Cloverdale Reporter, reflected on the event, stating, “A wealth of historic memories and good wishes were shared in print and in person in the newly renovated heritage church hall.” The gala provided an opportunity for members and guests to recount the church’s rich history and significant contributions to the community.
Heritage Recognition and Community Engagement
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a plaque by the Surrey Heritage Advisory Commission (SHAC), officially designating Cloverdale United Church as a city heritage site. This significant recognition acknowledges the church’s historical importance and its ongoing commitment to community service. The plaque, prominently displayed next to the church’s red front door, reads, “Cloverdale United Church is significant as a demonstration of community spirit in Cloverdale, at a time when Cloverdale was the administrative and commercial centre of Surrey. The Church was built using volunteer labour. The Church is valued as a significant and late example of Gothic Revival style and as a transition example of the influence of Modern architecture.”
Maxwell-Lewis described the SHAC designation as “lovely” and emphasized how it celebrates the church’s milestones leading into 2025.
Another notable moment during the gala was the installation of the church’s first Associate Minister, Youngsun Cheon. Youngsun recently participated in his inaugural service, marking a new chapter for the church, which boasts a vibrant Korean congregation. Under the guidance of Cho Hee Won, congregation volunteers facilitate regular English language learning classes for new immigrants, reinforcing the church’s commitment to inclusivity and community support.
May Taylor, a long-standing member of Cloverdale United Church and an award-winning heritage quilter, also attended the dinner. Taylor has generously donated several quilts to the church over the years, with one displayed prominently during the evening. Maxwell-Lewis noted that “May was on hand to tell the stories of how and why the quilts were designed,” adding a personal touch to the celebration.
The gala dinner served not only as a celebration of past achievements but also as a reminder of the ongoing role that Cloverdale United Church plays in fostering community spirit and support. With its rich history and a bright future ahead, the church continues to be a significant part of Cloverdale and Surrey.
