New Medical Clinic Planned for Linwood Community Centre

Plans are underway for a new medical clinic in Linwood, as a proposed addition to the community centre aims to enhance local healthcare services. The new facility, measuring approximately 2,000 square feet, is set to be established at the community centre located at 5279 Ament Line. A memorandum of understanding between the Woolwich Community Health Centre (WCHC) and Wellesley Township was approved by the committee of the whole on Tuesday, paving the way for this significant development.

The township will lease the space for the clinic, with WCHC responsible for commissioning architectural and engineering plans, as well as covering capital costs. The existing nurse practitioner’s office at 3777 Manser Rd. has proven inadequate to meet the growing needs of the community, as highlighted in a report presented to the council. It also faces accessibility challenges, prompting the need for a more suitable facility.

WCHC, which operates three medical locations in St. Jacobs and Wellesley, initiated discussions with township officials about establishing a health centre in Linwood. The proposed clinic is intended to operate similarly to the successful health clinic at the Township of Wellesley Recreation Complex. During meetings with WCHC, township staff evaluated various factors, including parking, accessibility, sanitation, and potential impacts on recreational facilities.

The decision to add the health clinic to the eastern side of the current building emerged as the best option. Modifications will include relocating an exit door from the library to the north wall and adding more windows to the south wall to compensate for any loss of natural light.

The planned clinic will extend the building by approximately 35 feet. Upgrades to the existing gravel parking area are also on the agenda to accommodate the health centre’s visitors. Before construction can begin, a draft lease agreement detailing the costs and responsibilities of both parties will be presented to the council for approval.

Local officials expressed optimism about the project, emphasizing the benefits it will bring to the community. The report notes, “Health is a provincial responsibility, but there are local opportunities to promote a healthy living style and improve mental well-being.” By situating a health centre on township-owned recreational land, the initiative aims to foster health promotion within Linwood.

The anticipated addition of a part-time physician on-site is expected to expand healthcare services in the area, making it a positive development for residents. As the plans move forward, the community looks forward to enhanced access to essential health services, reflecting a commitment to improving overall well-being.
