Spring Valley Pursues Grants for Future Ballfield Complex
Spring Valley is actively pursuing state grants to facilitate the acquisition of land designated for a new baseball and softball complex. The Spring Valley City Council unanimously approved a decision to apply for two grants earlier this week, including funding from the Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program.
If successful, the OSLAD grant would enable the city to purchase approximately 10 acres of land located just north of John F. Kennedy Elementary School. The proposed site extends from JFK School to Terry Street, measuring about 300 feet by 1,446 feet. Mayor Melanie Malooley-Thompson emphasized that the city’s intention is not to acquire the property immediately but to secure the necessary funding for future purchase.
The envisioned complex aims to enhance local recreational opportunities and is part of the city’s comprehensive park master plan. Plans include the construction of four ballfields, walking paths, a playground, and parking facilities. Mayor Malooley-Thompson highlighted the importance of this project for the community, stating that it would significantly contribute to recreational activities in the area.
According to the city’s timeline, OSLAD grants are typically awarded in February, which means Spring Valley could receive feedback on its application by early next year. The council’s proactive step underscores the commitment to improving public spaces and fostering community engagement through sports and outdoor activities.
By pursuing these grants, Spring Valley demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to urban planning and community development. The city’s efforts not only aim to provide quality recreational facilities but also to enhance the overall quality of life for its residents.
