Suspect Arrested in $5,000 Theft of IndyCar Legend’s Helmet

UPDATE: Vancouver police have just arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the shocking theft of late IndyCar driver Greg Moore’s prized racing helmet. The iconic helmet was stolen from the BC Sports Hall of Fame at BC Place on September 3, 2023, where it was on loan from Moore’s family as part of a tribute exhibit.
This theft, which involved a helmet worn during Moore’s 1998 victory at the Rio 400 in Brazil, has sent ripples through the sports community. Moore, who tragically lost his life at just 24 years old during a race in California, remains a beloved figure in British Columbia. “Greg Moore was a B.C. icon who rose to the top of his sport and inspired us all,” said Sgt. Steve Addison of the Vancouver Police Department. “The theft of his racing helmet has impacted Greg’s family, the sports community, and everyone who cheered him to success.”
Police launched an investigation that led them to identify the suspect and track the stolen helmet to a residential building on Dunlevy Avenue in the Downtown Eastside. The suspect was arrested on September 12, 2023, for theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property. However, he has yet to be formally charged and is scheduled to appear in court on November 19, 2023.
The return of the helmet is a relief for Moore’s family and fans alike, highlighting the emotional significance of preserving his legacy. As the investigation continues, authorities encourage anyone with additional information to come forward, stressing the importance of community vigilance in protecting local heritage.
