URGENT UPDATE: Consent Awareness Week is officially underway at the University of Victoria (UVic), running from September 23-25. The Sexualized Violence Resource Office (SVRO) is actively engaging students at Petch Fountain today, delivering crucial information and support in the fight against sexualized violence.

Today, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., students can visit the SVRO booth for free coffee, treats, and vital conversations about consent. This initiative highlights the importance of understanding and practicing consent in all interactions, especially in a university setting where over half of sexual assaults occur within the first six weeks of the academic year.

The excitement of university life should never be overshadowed by the threat of sexualized violence. As students navigate new friendships and experiences, it is imperative to cultivate a culture of respect and consent. The SVRO emphasizes that consent goes beyond merely asking for permission; it is about fostering respect and consideration in every aspect of life—whether that involves taking a photo, borrowing personal items, or even sharing private conversations.

Community Day on September 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will further enhance this awareness, allowing participants to connect with on and off-campus support systems. This is an opportunity to test your knowledge about consent and learn how to properly receive disclosures related to sexualized violence.

The SVRO serves as a vital hub for confidential and non-judgmental support, reinforcing that no one should face these challenges alone. By actively participating in Consent Awareness Week, you can contribute to changing the statistics and help create a safer campus environment.
