Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame Inducts Jon Ryan, Julie Foster

UPDATE: The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame just celebrated its newest inductees, including football star Jon Ryan and rugby champion Julie Foster, in a heartfelt ceremony on Saturday, bringing together family, friends, and fans. The event highlights the significant impact these athletes have made in Saskatchewan’s sports history.
Ryan, a native of Regina, expressed his emotions during the ceremony, reflecting on his journey from a young boy visiting the Hall of Fame to joining the ranks of legends like Gordie Howe. “It’s really a special weekend for me,” Ryan stated. He played 12 seasons in the NFL and captured a Super Bowl championship in 2014, becoming the first athlete from Saskatchewan to achieve this milestone.
Foster, who made her mark in rugby by competing in three World Cups between 1998 and 2006, also shared her journey. With 44 international appearances, she ranks third all-time for Canada. “It’s just a great sport,” Foster said, reminiscing about the friendships forged through competition. Her induction coincides with the success of Canada’s women’s rugby team reaching the World Cup final in New Zealand, underscoring her significant contributions to the sport.
The ceremony also honored others in the builder category, including Brad Hornung and Klara Kesmarky Miller, as well as the 1997 and 1998 Regina Rams Football Club and the 1978 and 1980 Saskatoon Harmony Centre Women’s Softball teams.
Ryan emphasized the importance of representation for young athletes, stating, “This whole entire hall is proof that we can… It just means so much to me because I don’t think a lot of people thought I was gonna make it.” His return to the CFL in 2019 after a long NFL career further inspires the next generation of athletes in Saskatchewan.
Foster noted the evolution of rugby in Canada, highlighting the increased sponsorship and opportunities for young players today. “Now, there’s more money coming in, and they have more coaches that they like. It’s just so much better,” she explained, emphasizing the positive changes in the sport.
With the Hall of Fame recognizing these remarkable athletes, the event serves as a powerful reminder of the achievements and potential of Saskatchewan’s sports community. Fans and supporters are encouraged to share their pride in these inductees, celebrating their lasting legacy in sports history.
