Ruth Cull, known to many as Molly Penny, has died at the age of 67. Cull, who dedicated more than 20 years to spreading joy at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), passed away on Sunday night, according to her family. Her contributions as a therapeutic clown made a significant impact on countless children and families navigating difficult times.

Before embracing her clowning career, Cull served as an operating room nurse at CHEO. A clowning workshop opened the door to her second career, where she touched the lives of many with her compassionate spirit. As Molly Penny, she handed out stickers, hosted “Bored” meetings, and provided emotional support to children and their parents during challenging hospital stays.

“Ruth was one of the first nurses to join the newly built Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, working in the Operating Room,” said Joseph Cull, her son. “Later, she would become the heart of CHEO, known as ‘Molly Penny,’ the hospital’s therapeutic clown.” Joseph highlighted his mother’s infectious smile, quick wit, and enormous heart, noting that she brought joy to thousands during some of their most difficult times. “For many, Molly Penny wasn’t just a character – she was a lifeline of laughter and hope!”

Molly Penny officially retired in September 2022, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and support. Her role at CHEO exemplified the profound impact that therapeutic clowning can have within healthcare settings. The hospital expressed its sorrow over her passing, reflecting on the joy she brought to patients and families alike.

Funeral arrangements for Ruth Cull will be announced at a later date, allowing friends, family, and the community to pay their respects to a remarkable individual who dedicated her life to uplifting others.
