Calgary Flames Fall 3-0 to Edmonton Oilers in Pre-Season Match

The Calgary Flames suffered a 3-0 defeat against the Edmonton Oilers in a pre-season game on March 10, 2024. Both teams, still early in their training camps with only three practices completed, exhibited signs of rust. Flames head coach Ryan Huska noted the team’s struggle with puck control and overall pace, stating, “It felt like we were not really good with the puck tonight and it felt like we were a slower team.” Despite the loss, Huska emphasized that there is room for improvement as the Flames move forward in their pre-season schedule.
The Flames were fielding a roster that was partially divided, with a group participating in a split-squad game in Edmonton. This context contributed to what Huska described as a “thoroughly underwhelming” performance. “We didn’t play the way we’re going to have to play to have success, but those are things we can easily teach now,” he added, looking ahead to their next match against the Seattle Kraken.
One notable highlight from the game was Zayne Parekh, the Flames’ ninth-overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. The 19-year-old defenseman appeared more at ease against NHL competition compared to his previous training camp experience. Parekh logged 20:22 of ice time, the second-most among Flames players, and registered two shots on goal, hitting a post and drawing a penalty. Upon reflecting on his performance, he stated, “I mean, first game back so maybe a little bit better than I expected.”
Huska acknowledged Parekh’s performance, stating, “I thought he did some good things in the offensive zone and I thought he moved around. Of our younger players, I thought he had the most jump of the younger guys when you looked at his game.” While Parekh’s game was not flawless, it was a promising start for the young player as he begins his professional career.
In addition to Parekh, several other young players made their mark during the game. Sam Honzek, Matvei Gridin, and Aydar Suniev were among the standout prospects who showcased their potential. Each player had moments of brilliance as well as challenges, a typical scenario for newcomers adjusting to the rigors of professional hockey.
As the Flames continue their pre-season preparations, the focus will be on refining skills and building team chemistry. With training camp only just beginning, there is an understanding that the players will have opportunities to improve ahead of the regular season. The Flames will look to bounce back in their upcoming match against Seattle, aiming to implement the lessons learned from this early setback.
