Johnson Controls, Concordia Launch Urgent Net Zero Retrofit Initiative

UPDATE: Johnson Controls and Concordia University have just announced a groundbreaking partnership to retrofit the historic Guy-De Maisonneuve Building in Montreal, marking a significant step in the university’s ambitious PLAN/NET ZERØ initiative. This urgent move aims to transform the 59-year-old building into a model of energy efficiency and sustainability.
The partnership will implement cutting-edge technologies to reduce energy consumption by up to 50%, setting the stage for a series of upgrades across nearly 80 buildings on Concordia’s campuses. This initiative is crucial for addressing climate change and demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable practices.
Michael Di Grappa, Vice-President of Services and Sustainability at Concordia University, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “This flagship initiative reflects our commitment to shaping the next generation of resilient, intelligent, and carbon-neutral campuses and cities.”
Through the use of advanced solutions like air-sourced heat pumps and heat recovery systems, Johnson Controls will help Concordia earn prestigious certifications, including LEED Existing Buildings and WELL CertifiedTM, enhancing its reputation as a leader in sustainable innovation.
Dr. Russell Garcia, Director of Higher Education at Johnson Controls, highlighted the broader impact, saying, “This initiative directly supports Québec’s efforts to cut carbon emissions while cutting energy costs.” The retrofitting project not only aims to improve energy efficiency but also serves as a living lab for students and researchers to explore innovative solutions in real-world conditions.
This partnership is more than a renovation; it’s a commitment to co-innovation. Students and industry partners will collaborate through Concordia’s Next-Generation Cities Institute, ensuring that the project fosters green economic development in Montreal and prepares future leaders for the energy transition.
The initiative is also set to contribute to grid stability and long-term emissions reduction, aligning with the sustainable urban infrastructure goals outlined by the Next-Generation Cities Institute. Hassaan Khan, Managing Director of Johnson Controls Canada, stated, “The role of universities in urban decarbonization is of paramount importance. They pave the way for innovation on all fronts.”
As the project unfolds, all eyes will be on Concordia University as it leads the charge towards a sustainable future. The community can expect to see progress within the coming months as the first phase of retrofitting begins. Watch for updates on this transformative journey towards net zero emissions.
