Ontario Invests $5 Million to Boost Biomass Industry and Jobs

The province of Ontario has announced a significant investment of $5 million aimed at revitalizing the biomass industry in Northern Ontario. This funding is intended to create and save forestry jobs while enhancing the region’s production capacity by 12 percent. The initiative is also projected to reduce wood waste by 25 percent and lower emissions by 21 percent, reinforcing the province’s commitment to sustainability.

Ian Dunn, R.P.F., President and CEO of the Ontario Forest Industries Association, emphasized the importance of this initiative in a recent news release. “Today’s announcement is an essential step toward strengthening northern and rural communities across Ontario. We are helping to create good jobs, supporting the circular bioeconomy, and building a more sustainable and resilient future for our sector,” he stated.

Funding Details and Economic Impact

The funding for this project is part of the Forest Biomass Program, which focuses on transforming leftover wood into valuable products such as fuel, building materials, and bioplastics. This investment follows a prior allocation of $3 million earlier this month and $6.2 million in July 2023. Together, these financial commitments aim to bolster the local economy and address challenges faced by the forestry sector.

According to a report by CBC News, Northern Ontario has experienced significant economic strain due to recent mill closures, which have impacted an estimated 900 jobs. Despite these challenges, the forestry sector has generated approximately $21.6 billion in provincial revenue in the same year.

In addition to the new investment, the Ontario government has approved nearly $72 million through the Forest Sector Investment and Innovation Program (FSIIP). This funding is essential for supporting the province’s forestry sector, emphasizing innovation and sustainability in the face of economic challenges.
