New Film Celebrates Canada’s First Female Infantry Officer

A new film titled “Out Standing”, inspired by the life of Sandra Perron, Canada’s first female infantry officer, premiered at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on September 26, 2023. The military drama, based on Perron’s memoir, “Out Standing in the Field: A Memoir by Canada’s First Female Infantry Officer,”, first debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2023.

In an interview with CTV Your Morning Ottawa, Perron expressed her pride in the film’s portrayal of her story. “I was so proud of this movie and the way they didn’t sensationalize it or make Nina Kiri, my role, a super woman,” she stated. “You know she’s petite, she’s strong, she’s got drive. I love the movie and the way they stayed true to my story and portrayed my loyalty and my admiration for the military.”

Perron made history in 1990 when she became the first Canadian female infantry officer. She emphasized that she did not set out to be a pioneer in the military. “I never thought of it that way,” she explained. “I wanted to be infantry, I wanted to go airborne, whether I was the first or not, for me, back then, it was just background noise.” Her motivation stemmed from a desire to continue a family legacy of military service, as both of her parents served in the armed forces.

“I wanted to continue that service to my country,” Perron noted. “I loved every aspect of the military. The physical, the leadership, the development and the challenges, I loved it.”

Following the publication of her memoir in 2017, the Quebec-based production company GPA Films approached Perron to adapt her story for the screen. “It was daunting, because all my secrets would be on the big screen, but they were in the book anyways,” she admitted. “I was excited to give voice to women across the country.”

Directed by Mélanie Charbonneau, “Out Standing” is set to be released in theaters across Canada. The premiere in Ottawa aims to support a charitable cause, with proceeds going to The Pepper Pod, a retreat center for women veterans founded by Perron.

The film’s contribution to highlighting the challenges and achievements faced by women in the military resonates with many, reflecting a broader narrative of empowerment and recognition.
