Record Emigration from Canada Hits New Highs in 2025

A significant trend has emerged as a record number of Canadians are choosing to leave the country. According to data from Statistics Canada, emigration reached an unprecedented level in 2024, with over 118,000 individuals moving abroad. The first half of 2025 already indicates a continuation of this pattern, with 54,530 departures recorded from January to June, the highest figure for any first half of a calendar year. As the year progresses, the total for 2025 is expected to surpass previous records.
Provincial Breakdown of Emigration Trends
Not all provinces are contributing equally to this surge in emigration. British Columbia leads the way, with over 12,000 residents leaving in the first half of 2025, representing more than 22% of the national total. This is notable considering the province only makes up less than 14% of Canada’s population.
In contrast, Ontario, which is the most populous province, accounted for the largest share overall, with more than 25,000 departures during the same period. Meanwhile, Alberta has experienced a slowdown compared to last year, contributing just under 11.5% of emigrants, which is slightly below its population share.
Quebec’s Unique Position
Interestingly, Quebec does not follow the national trend. With over 21% of Canada’s total population, the province has only represented about 12.5% of emigrants so far this year. This discrepancy raises questions, particularly when compared to the higher rates seen in Ontario and British Columbia.
Several factors may explain Quebec’s lower emigration rates. The cost of living in major cities like Montreal tends to be more manageable compared to cities such as Toronto or Vancouver. Additionally, Quebec’s strong cultural identity and linguistic ties could make the idea of relocating abroad feel more daunting for its residents.
At the other end of the spectrum, Newfoundland and Labrador recorded the smallest share of emigration, with only 118 residents leaving in the first half of the year.
Rising costs, housing challenges, and broader economic uncertainties are likely contributing factors driving many Canadians to seek opportunities beyond their borders. Each individual’s motivations vary, yet the observable trend indicates that an increasing number of Canadians are contemplating life elsewhere.
If the current trajectory continues, 2025 could be marked as a year of significant departures, potentially leading to the highest level of emigration Canada has ever witnessed. This evolving situation highlights the changing dynamics of Canadian society and the ongoing search for better opportunities abroad.
