UPDATE: A rapidly spreading wildfire near Peachland, dubbed the Munro Lake Wildfire, has forced the evacuation of 325 properties as of Thursday evening, July 13, 2023. The fire, which is now approximately 70 hectares in size, is believed to be human-caused, according to the BC Wildfire Service.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant as more than 1,000 properties are currently on evacuation alert, meaning they must be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. The BC Wildfire Service reports that fire behavior intensified earlier today due to strong winds and dry conditions.

Mayor Patrick Van Minsel expressed concern for the safety of residents but emphasized confidence in the local firefighters and emergency services. “Are we worried? Of course, you’re always worried about those things,” he stated. “But as I said, you have full faith in your firefighters; they’ve trained for this, our emergency services are trained for this and our staff are trained for this.”

Emergency response teams, including ground crews and helicopters, are actively working to contain the blaze. The BC Wildfire Service has mobilized structure protection personnel to safeguard homes and critical infrastructure in the area.

As the situation develops, officials advise residents in the affected regions to follow evacuation orders and stay updated on the latest information from authorities. The community is rallying to support those affected, and local organizations are setting up resources for evacuees.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates as firefighters work to battle the Munro Lake Wildfire and protect the Peachland area.
