Hawkins Leads North Texas to 36-22 Victory Over South Alabama

Caleb Hawkins delivered an impressive performance, scoring three touchdowns to lead the North Texas Mean Green to a 36-22 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars on October 7, 2023. This win marks North Texas’ first 5-0 start since 1959, a notable achievement for the program.

Hawkins showcased his versatility by rushing for 140 yards on 16 carries and adding 78 yards receiving. His final touchdown came during a decisive moment in the game, a 27-yard run with just two minutes remaining. This score followed a strong effort from South Alabama, who had narrowed the gap to just six points after a 2-yard touchdown run by Kentrel Bullock.

North Texas established an early lead, with Hawkins scoring on a 6-yard run to give the Mean Green a 14-7 advantage at halftime. He further extended the lead in the third quarter, taking a screen pass for a 68-yard touchdown.

The Mean Green’s quarterback, Drew Mestemaker, completed 14 of 26 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing a rushing touchdown. In addition, Miles Coleman added another rushing touchdown for North Texas.

For the Jaguars, Bishop Davenport struggled despite showing resilience, completing 17 of 34 passes for 195 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. He also managed to run for a score. Devin Voisin was a bright spot for South Alabama, recording 97 yards receiving on five catches, while Rod Gibbs contributed a touchdown reception.

This defeat marks the fourth consecutive loss for South Alabama, who now hold a record of 1-4 for the season.
