Nanaimo Filmmaker Explores Unique Sounds in New Docu-Series

A new docu-series titled *Found in Sound*, created by Nanaimo filmmaker and musician Laura Kelsey, will delve into the unique sounds of Vancouver Island, highlighting their historical and technical aspects. The second season promises to expand on the healing potential of sound introduced in the first season, guiding viewers through an auditory journey that reveals unexpected sources of sound.
The soundtrack for this new season features a remarkable twist; it was composed entirely using sounds generated by local plants. Kelsey explained, “I used a plant sound device to record local plants and trees, which Nanaimo musician Cal Webb remixed.” The innovative process involved converting electrical signals emitted by plants, including ferns and arbutus trees, into musical compositions through audio manipulation software. Kelsey expressed her excitement at discovering these natural sounds, stating, “If even plants can somehow create sound, what else are we missing?”
In addition to plant sounds, the series will explore the communication of local marine life. Kelsey noted that many fish species rely on sound for communication, revealing, “There are these amazing local fish off our coast that create very loud and beautiful songs.” Her discussions with biologist Xavier Mouy, who developed an underwater recording array to study fish sounds, uncovered fascinating insights. The male plainfin midshipman fish, for example, gather close to shore and produce a deep humming noise that resembles chanting monks, an auditory phenomenon that can be heard above water.
Among Kelsey’s memorable experiences during the production of this season was her opportunity to pull the whistle onboard the Queen of Cowichan. This moment connected her to the local history of a sound familiar to many residents of Nanaimo—the multi-chime whistle of B.C. Ferries. Kelsey learned about Robert Swanson, the inventor of these whistles, and his whistle farm located in the Nanaimo River Valley, where he tested his airhorns that are now utilized worldwide.
The second season of *Found in Sound* comprises six episodes featuring conversations with residents from Nanaimo and central Vancouver Island, as well as researchers from local museums and societies. The series is set to premiere on Telus Optic TV and Stream-Plus on September 23, 2023, followed by a release on YouTube on November 25, 2023.
To further engage with the community, Kelsey will conduct a workshop titled “Emotional Expression Through Songwriting and Sound.” This event will combine insights gained from producing the *Found in Sound* series with her personal creative experiences. The workshop is scheduled for October 21, 2023, at the Nanaimo Art Gallery from 19:00 to 21:00. Tickets for the workshop can be purchased at www.nanaimoartgallery.ca.
With her innovative approach to sound and storytelling, Kelsey continues to invite audiences to discover the auditory world around them, transforming how they perceive the environment and its unseen influences on health and well-being.
