B.C. Pumpkin Grower Aims to Defend Title at U.S. Competition
Richard Chan, a giant pumpkin grower from Richmond, British Columbia, is preparing to defend his title at an annual weigh-off competition in Bellevue, Washington. Chan has been cultivating these colossal gourds since 1982 after receiving seeds from a prominent grower in Eastern Canada. His passion for growing large pumpkins has led him to remarkable success over the years.
Chan reminisced about his early days in pumpkin growing, recalling, “My first pumpkin was 278 pounds, which was half the world record back then. Now, that wouldn’t even qualify for anything.” The competitive landscape has changed dramatically, with weights soaring beyond previous records.
This year, Chan is transporting two impressive entries to compete. His largest pumpkin, estimated to weigh around **2,000 pounds**, is slightly lighter than last year’s champion, which tipped the scales at over **2,200 pounds**. Despite the difference in weight, Chan remains optimistic about defending his title.
In addition to his main entry, Chan will also bring along a second pumpkin weighing approximately **1,600 pounds**. Both gourds were loaded onto a flat-bed truck on Friday, utilizing a crane for safety and efficiency.
The weigh-off in Bellevue is a significant event for pumpkin growers, drawing competitors from various regions. Each year, Chan’s participation has not only showcased his gardening skills but has also heightened interest in the sport.
As he prepares for the competition, Chan’s dedication to the craft continues to inspire fellow growers and pumpkin enthusiasts alike. The excitement surrounding this year’s event is palpable, as competitors and spectators alike look forward to witnessing these extraordinary displays of horticultural prowess.
