Camp Kindle Unveils $9 Million Expansion to Support Kids with Cancer

URGENT UPDATE: The Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta has just unveiled its completed $9 million expansion and accessibility project at Camp Kindle, marking a significant milestone for families affected by cancer. The celebration took place on Saturday, showcasing new facilities designed to enhance the camp experience for children undergoing treatment.

Located just an hour northwest of Calgary, Camp Kindle has undergone extensive renovations since fundraising began in June 2024. The project included demolition and construction starting in July. The improvements will increase capacity and introduce new indoor and outdoor play areas, ensuring that all children, regardless of mobility challenges, can fully participate in camp activities.

Dean Duffin, board chair and a dedicated member of the Kids Cancer Care community, expressed the importance of these upgrades. His child is a leukemia survivor who has enjoyed summers at Camp Kindle. He emphasized, “Kids that are undergoing treatment have freer and better access to all of the spaces. The new staff housing and multi-purpose areas will significantly enhance their camp experience.”

The expansion’s highlights include the unveiling of plans for the Shane Homes Treehouse Village, set to open in 2026, along with the Excel Homes Enchanted Pathway and other significant installations. These developments underscore the camp’s commitment to creating a nurturing environment for children facing cancer.

Christine McIver, the founder of Kids Cancer Care and former CEO, celebrated the opening of the new conservatory named in her honor, stating, “It’s been quite a wild ride. I don’t think anything in my 30 prior years compared to what led up to today.” Reflecting on the journey, she noted the camp was initially held together with “love and Band-Aids” after its acquisition in 2009. The recent renovations mark a transformative phase for Camp Kindle, focusing on accessibility for all children.
