La Salle Dems Forum Explores Urgent Healthcare and Economic Issues

UPDATE: The inaugural La Salle County Democrats forum took place Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the Grand Bear Lodge in Utica, addressing critical issues of healthcare, economic disparity, and campaign reform. This urgent gathering drew attention from local political figures and community members eager for solutions to pressing challenges.
Hosted by the La Salle County Democrats, the forum featured a lineup of candidates vying for U.S. Senator Dick Durbin’s seat in the upcoming 2026 Democratic primary. Among them were Kevin Ryan, U.S. Representatives Robin Kelly and Raja Krishnamoorthi, who each shared personal stories and significant policy proposals. Notably absent was candidate Jump Shepherd, who could not attend.
State Representative Murri Briel highlighted her staunch advocacy for affordable energy, internet access, and comprehensive healthcare. “Finding a way to have healthcare here that is the full gamut of healthcare and not limited based on a hospital’s religious beliefs,” she emphasized, addressing a crucial gap in services for residents. Briel also raised concerns about labor conditions and the urgent need for educational reform, advocating for teachers facing a “horrible” pension situation.
Opening the forum, Raja Krishnamoorthi drew from his immigrant background to underline the American dream. “That American dream, which my family was privileged to attain, is slipping out of grasp for millions of people,” he warned, attributing this decline to policies of the current administration. He called for a government that prioritizes support for struggling families rather than catering solely to the affluent.
Meanwhile, Kevin Ryan, a Chicago Public Schools teacher and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, addressed the influence of money in politics. “If you’re not independently wealthy, you don’t stand a shot,” he stated, stressing the need for campaign finance reform. Ryan is on a mission to redefine the Democratic Party as one that prioritizes people over financial interests.
The forum concluded with Briel expressing gratitude to the La Salle County Democrats and attendees, saying, “It’s been the honor of my life to fight for you, to believe in you and to listen to you.”
As voters prepare for the upcoming elections, the discussions at this forum underscore the urgency of addressing healthcare access, economic disparities, and campaign integrity. The La Salle County Democrats are poised to influence the political landscape as they continue to engage with pressing community concerns.
