Phoenix Mercury Stuns Lynx, Advances to WNBA Finals 86-81

UPDATE: The Phoenix Mercury have made a stunning comeback, overcoming a 13-point deficit in the final quarter to defeat the Minnesota Lynx 86-81 in Game 4 of the WNBA semifinals, clinching a spot in the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2021. This thrilling victory occurred on July 15, 2023, and reverberates across the sports world as fans celebrate the Mercury’s resilience.
Alyssa Thomas led the charge with 23 points, while DeWanna Bonner delivered crucial shots, including two pivotal 3-pointers in the final minutes, propelling the Mercury to victory. The Lynx, who were missing key players due to injuries and suspensions, struggled to maintain their lead as Phoenix executed a remarkable comeback.
Entering the fourth quarter trailing 68-55, the Mercury surged back, narrowing the gap to 70-69 after Sami Whitcomb’s 3-pointer with 4:46 left. Bonner then claimed the lead for Phoenix with her 3-pointer, and her performance in the final quarter, where she scored 11 points, proved vital for the team’s success.
Despite missing All-Star guard Napheesa Collier due to an ankle injury and head coach Cheryl Reeve’s suspension for Game 4, the Lynx fought back, led by Kayla McBride who scored an impressive 31 points. However, it was not enough to secure the win.
The Mercury’s victory marks a significant milestone as they prepare to face the winner of the Indiana-Las Vegas matchup in the Finals. Earlier on Sunday, Indiana forced a decisive Game 5 by defeating the Aces 90-83, setting the stage for an exciting finish to the semifinals.
This victory is more than a game; it embodies the spirit and determination of the Mercury, who are now just a series away from their first championship since 2014. Fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming finals, with the Mercury poised to make history.
As the WNBA playoffs heat up, all eyes will be on the championship series, with the Mercury ready to seize their opportunity. Stay tuned for more updates as the Finals approach, promising a thrilling showdown in women’s basketball.
