Timmins Transit Strike Averted: Last-Minute Deal Reached

UPDATE: A potential strike disrupting Timmins Transit services has been averted following a crucial last-minute agreement between the City of Timmins and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1544. Just hours before a strike was set to begin, officials confirmed the deal, ensuring that all bus services would continue uninterrupted.
On September 26, 2023, a tentative contract agreement was announced shortly after 6 p.m., paving the way for a resolution to a tense situation that had left transit workers poised to strike on September 29. The city emphasized the importance of reliable public transportation for the community, stating that the agreement reflects the dedication of all transit personnel, including drivers and dispatchers.
In an official statement, city officials expressed relief at the resolution, noting, “At this time, there will be no interruption to regular Timmins Transit services.” The agreement concludes a challenging period of collective bargaining, which put transit workers in a legal strike position just days before the deal was reached.
While the details of the agreement remain confidential until ratification, city officials indicated that more information will be available early next week. The ratification process requires union members to vote in favor of the agreement, with final approval needed from city council.
Expect to hear more updates on this developing story as media availability is scheduled for Monday. This agreement not only benefits transit workers but also ensures that residents of Timmins can rely on consistent and accessible public transportation without disruption.
