The 11th annual Superhero Run is set to take place on Saturday at Brock University, with a fundraising goal of $150,000 to support the Niagara Children’s Centre. This year’s event aims to surpass a significant milestone, raising over $1 million since its inception, according to development director Pam Sharp.

Participants can choose from a 2.5-kilometre or five-kilometre loop around the university campus, along with a one-kilometre accessible course designed to engage all attendees. The funds raised through the Superhero Run will directly benefit over 5,900 children and families who rely on programs not covered by provincial funding.

“Our support services, including recreational therapy and on-site accessible aquatics programs, are entirely funded by community donations,” Sharp explained. “These dollars are critical for us to support the whole family.”

As of now, the event has raised approximately $850,000. Sharp noted the community’s generosity: “It’s incredible because it really speaks to how supportive our community is of one another.”

The event promises new activities for participants this year. “We want to make sure it’s a new and exciting experience,” Sharp said. One highlight will be the superhero stuffy station, where children can select a stuffed animal and create their own superhero companion to take home. Additionally, the superhero academy will feature accessible karate-based activities aimed at keeping children active and engaged.

A new mascot representing the core values of the Niagara Children’s Centre will also be introduced during the event. Sharp anticipates around 400 participants, expressing confidence that more registrations will come in during the final week leading up to the run.

“It’s important we’re able to provide that support and education to parents as well as the children,” she added. The Superhero Run stands as a testament to community spirit and the ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable families in the Niagara region.
