Othello Tunnels Fully Reopen in Hope Ahead of Winter Closure
UPDATE: The iconic Othello Tunnels in Hope, British Columbia, have fully reopened to the public, according to a recent announcement from BC Parks. This comes just in time for visitors to explore the tunnels before they close for the winter season on October 31, 2023.
The reopening was confirmed on September 29, 2023, marking the completion of Phase 2 of the remediation efforts aimed at restoring this popular tourist destination. Guests can now access both the fourth and fifth tunnels at Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, allowing for full exploration of the Kettle Valley Road corridor.
BC Parks stated, “Phase 2 of our remediation efforts to reopen the Othello Tunnels has been completed, and guests can now explore the entire Kettle Valley Road corridor within the park.” However, officials warned that shortly after the closing for the season, additional remediation work will commence, targeting completion before the next reopening in Spring 2026.
The community of Hope has expressed excitement and relief as they welcome back this beloved landmark, which had been closed since the devastating floods in November 2021. The restoration project, funded by $10 million through the federal government’s Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements program, began in April 2022 to address severe damage that included compromised bridge foundations and eroding access routes to roads and trails.
Initially, partial access to the tunnels was announced for July 2024, but unexpected delays meant that only two of the five tunnels opened by mid-August that year. The reopening of the third tunnel followed on June 27, 2024, but now, with the full reopening, visitors are eager to experience the majestic beauty of the Othello Tunnels once more.
As the window to visit narrows, locals and tourists alike are urged to take advantage of this opportunity before the tunnels close again for the winter months. With the stunning scenery and rich history, the Othello Tunnels are a must-see destination in British Columbia.
For those planning to visit, remember that the tunnels will be accessible until October 31, 2023. Don’t miss out on this chance to explore a vital piece of Hope’s heritage!
