Urgent: Sycamore Community Mourns Couple Found Dead, Fund Rises

UPDATE: The Sycamore community is in shock following the tragic deaths of Gary A. Schmidt, 60, and Holly S. Schmidt, 59, found dead in their home on October 24, 2023. In the wake of their untimely passing, a public GoFundMe campaign has swiftly garnered over $66,504 from more than 715 donations to support their grieving family.
Neighbors describe the Schmidts as a loving couple known for their kindness and community spirit. “They deserve to be remembered for the love and kindness they gave so openly,” said DeKalb resident Sara Dwyer, who became friends with Holly after adopting a dog they fostered.
The couple’s sudden death has left many in the community reeling. Reports indicate their adult son has been charged in connection with the incident, adding to the heartbreak felt by those who knew them. “This heartbreaking loss will be felt by the greater Sycamore community for a long time,” stated interim Superintendent Nick Reineck in a message to district families on October 27.
Holly Schmidt dedicated over 20 years to the Sycamore School District 427, most recently at North Grove Elementary School. Colleagues remember her as a passionate advocate for her students. “Holly was a beautiful light in this broken world,” said fellow educator Laura Heitzig, emphasizing her positivity and hard work.
Community members have begun to gather in front of the Schmidts’ home on Oakland Drive, leaving flowers and heartfelt messages. A makeshift memorial features a photo of the couple smiling on a boat, celebrating their life together.
As of now, the GoFundMe campaign aims to ease the financial burdens faced by the grieving family. Organizers expressed their desire to “surround them with love and support” during this overwhelming time. The fund’s rapid growth underscores the impact the Schmidts had on those around them.
Colleagues at North Grove shared stories of Holly’s commitment to her students and her colleagues. “She was instrumental in multiple successful negotiations for her peers,” said Hutha Hicks, president of the Sycamore Education Support Staff Association.
The Schmidts’ legacy is one of love and community, with many hoping to remember them not for the tragedy of their deaths but for the joy they brought to others. “Every day is a gift,” Reineck reflected, quoting Holly’s wisdom, reminding everyone to cherish their time together and support one another.
As the community seeks to heal, further updates on the investigation are anticipated. For now, the outpouring of support for the Schmidt family illustrates the profound impact they had on their community.
