Bartholomew’s Pub Marks 50 Years with Celebrations in Victoria
Bartholomew’s Pub in Victoria is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary this October, marking a significant milestone for the beloved establishment. The venue will host a series of events over a couple of weeks in mid-October to commemorate this half-century of service. According to bar manager Kait Taylor, while plans are still in the works, there are many ideas on the table to ensure a memorable celebration.
Taylor, who has worked at Bartholomew’s for almost two years, describes the pub as a “fun little place to work,” highlighting the strong sense of community among staff and regular patrons. With the arrival of the winter season, she expects the pub to become even cozier, adorned with lights and filled with guests enjoying the atmosphere.
Bartholomew’s embraces a British theme, featuring a warm decor and a menu with traditional offerings such as bangers & mash and Yorkshire puddings. Floor supervisor Keely Bayko notes the homey feel of the pub, which is enhanced by familiar faces among both staff and regulars, creating an inviting environment.
Live music is a staple at Bartholomew’s, with performances every Sunday evening and traditional Irish music showcased on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. The pub also hosts a ‘Happy Hour’ from 15:00 to close on Mondays, offering patrons the chance to enjoy premium spirits at cost, which Taylor describes as “pretty cool.”
Each day of the week features unique events, including trivia on Tuesdays, wing nights on Wednesdays, and music bingo on Thursdays. Fridays are dedicated to Guinness specials that offer patrons savings and an opportunity to enjoy the pub’s vibrant social scene.
Bartholomew’s caters to a diverse clientele, drawing in local patrons as well as tourists, particularly from the nearby DoubleTree Victoria hotel and cruise ships docked in the area. The pub’s offerings include a robust selection of beverages, featuring 26 beers and one cider on tap. Notable selections include Dark Matter and Appleton’s cider, with a rotating lineup of craft beers sourced from local breweries in Vancouver and Squamish.
The food menu boasts signature dishes like the popular bangers & mash and a hearty beef dip. Additionally, the pub serves Sunday roasts until supplies run out, often drawing in a crowd of both locals and tourists alike. Taylor remarks that the delicious roast has become a major attraction, complemented by $12-off bottles of wine.
The pub has adapted well since its reopening under new ownership by Alderaan Hospitality Ltd. in 2020. Executive chef Jason Clifford and director of food & beverages Morgan Watson have revitalized the venue, enhancing the cocktail menu and overall customer experience. Taylor points out that the focus on improving cocktail quality has been significant, with the introduction of a build-your-own gin and tonic program in partnership with Sheringham Distillery.
Bartholomew’s also embraces its historical roots, with much of its decor remaining original since its opening. Taylor explains that many pictures on the walls have been there for decades, and the ambiance has been carefully preserved to maintain the pub’s character.
As the anniversary approaches, both Taylor and Bayko express their excitement for the celebrations and encourage new visitors to experience what Bartholomew’s has to offer. “Just come and have a good time,” Taylor advises, emphasizing the friendly atmosphere and attentive service. Bayko adds that the pub’s outdoor patio is particularly enjoyable during the summer months, providing a lovely setting for patrons to relax and enjoy the vibrant local scene.
