Oktoberfest 2023 Ends with Gun Salute, 6.5M Attendees Celebrate

UPDATE: The 190th Oktoberfest has officially concluded in Munich, wrapping up the world’s largest folk festival with a traditional Bavarian salute from marksmen. The event, which ran from September 20 to October 8, attracted an incredible 6.5 million visitors, marking a triumphant return to form following pandemic disruptions.
Attendees were treated to a unique experience on September 26 when former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger surprised festival-goers by taking the stage to lead a live music performance in a packed beer tent. Dressed in traditional Bavarian attire, Schwarzenegger, accompanied by his partner Heather Milligan and son Christopher, captivated the crowd, creating a memorable moment amidst the festival’s festivities.
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, Oktoberfest faced challenges this year, including a serious incident on October 4 when police received a bomb threat linked to an explosion in the city. Authorities conducted a thorough search of the fairgrounds, temporarily closing the venue. Fortunately, it was deemed safe to resume celebrations later that evening. The threat was associated with a letter found near the crime scene, which contained vague references to explosives.
This year’s festival was particularly poignant, as it recalled the tragic bombing on September 26, 1980, which claimed the lives of 12 people, including three children, and injured over 200. The attack was perpetrated by a neo-Nazi supporter, a grim reminder of the festival’s historical vulnerabilities.
As Oktoberfest concludes, the emotional impact on attendees and locals resonates deeply. The festival not only celebrates Bavarian culture but also serves as a gathering point for millions, fostering a sense of community and joy.
Looking ahead, discussions are already underway regarding the 2024 Oktoberfest, with enthusiasts eager to return to the fairgrounds for another year of celebration. For now, attendees and organizers reflect on a successful event that showcased resilience and unity, even in the face of adversity.
