Nav Canada Conducts Navigation System Checks Over Whitehorse
Nav Canada, the organization responsible for Canada’s civil air navigation system, conducted airborne calibrations over Whitehorse on October 2. A Bombardier CRJ-200 aircraft was observed performing sharp turns and loops in the sky, particularly over the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport. This operation is part of routine maintenance checks following recent upgrades to the runway.
The inspection flights were designed to calibrate navigation systems and ensure safety for pilots landing in low-visibility conditions. According to Nav Canada’s spokesperson, Maryam Amini, the airborne checks involved testing instrument landing systems by utilizing various altitudes, speeds, and directions. Each approach made by the aircraft was intentional, contributing to the overall reliability of navigation aids.
The aircraft’s flight path took it south towards Carcross, where it created a capsule-shaped trajectory in the airspace above Whitehorse. This meticulous calibration process is integral to maintaining the high standards of air safety across Canada, as stated in a 2019 press release from Nav Canada.
The operational checks performed on October 2 were completed successfully, ensuring that the navigation systems remain reliable for future flights. The Bombardier CRJ-200, which bore the same flight number as during its inspection, departed Whitehorse the following day, heading to Churchill, Manitoba, as tracked by Flightradar24.
Nav Canada routinely undertakes such inspections throughout the country. These efforts are crucial for enhancing safety measures and ensuring that pilots have the necessary support when operating in challenging weather conditions. The inspections affirm Nav Canada’s commitment to providing safe and efficient air navigation services across Canada.
