Campbell River’s Braedyn Stovman to Compete at Pan-Am Gymnastics

URGENT UPDATE: Campbell River’s own Braedyn Stovman is set to make history as the sole Canadian representative at the Pan-Am Open Gymnastics Championship in Cancún, Mexico, from October 18 to October 22, 2023.

This remarkable 23-year-old athlete, who has Down Syndrome, is ready to showcase his extraordinary skills on an international stage. “Gymnastics has become his passion, and over time his forte,” said his mother, Brandi Stovman. “What started back in 2019 as a simple P.E. activity for homeschooling quickly grew into a way of life.”

Stovman’s journey in gymnastics has transformed his life, boosting his confidence, coordination, strength, and joy. However, as Brandi pointed out, there are limited opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities in the Campbell River area. Most of Braedyn’s training has come through private lessons, although he is a proud member of the Campbell River Gymnastics Association, where he trains under Todd Sader.

“We’ve been working to introduce adaptive gymnastics locally, but it’s slow to catch on,” Brandi explained. “This competition gives him the chance to finally show the world what he can do, alongside other incredible athletes who face similar barriers.”

To support Braedyn’s journey to Mexico, a fundraising campaign was launched, successfully surpassing their goal of $6,500. “Words can’t express how deeply grateful we are for every single person who has supported Braedyn’s journey, whether through donations, shares, kind words, or cheering him on from near and far,” Brandi expressed.

This championship is not just a competition; it represents a significant milestone for athletes with disabilities, highlighting their capabilities and resilience.
