Google Messages Introduces Video Blurring to Enhance Privacy

Google has announced an update to its Messages app that adds a new layer of privacy by blurring sensitive videos. This feature aims to help users avoid potentially embarrassing situations when viewing explicit content in public. With the rollout of this enhancement, users can now receive a warning before playing nudity-laden videos, reducing the risk of accidental exposure in crowded environments.

Enhanced Privacy with Video Blurring

Previously, Google Messages included a feature that automatically blurred explicit photos. As of the October 2025 Play Services update, this capability extends to videos as well. According to Android Authority, the new Sensitive Content Warnings feature utilizes advanced technology to detect nudity in videos and blur it accordingly. This update aims to enhance user experience by providing a visual cue before content is played, particularly in public spaces such as subways or cafes.

Importantly, users need not worry about their privacy being compromised. The video blurring feature operates solely on the device itself, ensuring that videos are not uploaded to the cloud for analysis. Instead, Google employs the SafetyCore system, which is designed specifically to identify explicit content. When such content is detected, the video is blurred automatically, offering users the option to delete it before deciding to view.

Opt-In Feature and Current Limitations

While this new feature is a significant addition, it is not enabled by default. Users must actively opt in by navigating to the settings menu within Google Messages. The path to enable this feature is: Protection and Safety > Messages settings > Protection and safety > Manage sensitive content warnings. This requirement allows users to maintain control over their privacy settings.

It is also worth noting that the blurring system does not currently extend to GIFs. Therefore, users should remain cautious when sending or receiving animated content that could be considered sensitive. The update, identified as version 25.39, is essential for those who wish to utilize the new video blurring capabilities, and users running older software versions will need to update their applications to access this feature.
