Oswego Panthers Secure Regional Win with Late Interception

URGENT UPDATE: The Oswego Panthers clinched a thrilling 13-7 victory against Joliet West in the IHSA Kankakee Regional semifinal on Thursday, thanks to a game-sealing interception by junior Jazmin Hurston with just 27 seconds left on the clock. This crucial stop has propelled the Panthers to the regional title game against Yorkville, marking a historic moment for the team.
As the clock wound down, Oswego was clinging to a precarious lead, having held Joliet West scoreless since the first quarter. With under a minute remaining, the Panthers were forced to punt, putting their season on the line. Hurston’s interception not only secured the win but also showcased her determination to make a game-changing play. “I just wanted to make sure I got the ball,” Hurston stated. “Interceptions, I love them.”
Oswego’s defense was a standout, recording two interceptions against a strong Joliet West offense. Just moments before Hurston’s pivotal play, teammate Sophie Augustine also intercepted a pass, showcasing the Panthers’ resilience and teamwork.
The Panthers took the lead with a dazzling 72-yard touchdown reception by Leona Bateman from quarterback Violette Wisniowicz in the second quarter, tying the game at 7-7. The go-ahead score came in the third quarter when Wisniowicz connected with Mak Hill for a 14-yard touchdown. “It definitely helped out my team,” Hill reflected on the score that shifted the momentum in Oswego’s favor.
The victory is especially significant for Oswego, as they are the only team in their first season competing in the Kankakee Regional semifinals. Head coach Abby Jambor praised her team’s growth throughout the season, acknowledging the challenges they faced in catching up to more experienced teams. “They deserve to be in this opportunity Thursday to make history for Oswego in flag football,” she remarked.
Looking ahead, the Panthers face a daunting challenge in the regional title game against Yorkville, a team that previously defeated them 41-0 on September 10, 2023. Wisniowicz expressed confidence in her team’s progress, stating, “I look forward to seeing us get better and hopefully doing the same thing we did today.”
For Joliet West, the loss marks a tough end to the season, with junior Mallory Crisafulli scoring their only touchdown on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Maya Zanzola. Zanzola, part of a senior class that will be missed next season, emphasized the importance of resilience for her younger teammates. “Things are going to bring you down, and you’ve got to just build yourself back up,” she said.
As the Panthers prepare for the regional title game, all eyes will be on Oswego as they aim to secure a historic win and continue their remarkable journey in flag football.
