Fire at Yukon Mine Camp Claims 2 Lives, Investigation Underway
URGENT UPDATE: A devastating fire at the Brewer Creek mine camp in the Yukon has tragically claimed the lives of two seasonal workers. The incident occurred early on October 3, 2023, and the Yukon Coroner’s Service is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatalities.
The camp, situated approximately 100 kilometres south of Dawson City, is remote and only accessible by air or boat. Both victims were 20 years old and hailed from British Columbia. Their deaths have sent shockwaves through the mining community, prompting an outpouring of condolences from colleagues and friends.
Five other individuals were injured in the fire and were promptly medevacked to the Dawson City Community Hospital for treatment. Their current health status has not been disclosed, but authorities are monitoring their conditions closely.
According to the coroner’s office, the mine was scheduled to close on October 4, just one day after the tragic incident. This has raised additional questions about the timing and potential causes of the fire.
Authorities have confirmed that suspicious causes have been ruled out, but the exact origin of the blaze remains undetermined. The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Whitehorse Fire Marshal’s Office, the Yukon Workers’ Safety and Compensation Board, and the Dawson City RCMP detachment.
In an official statement, the coroner’s office expressed their deepest condolences to the families, friends, and co-workers affected by this tragic event. As the investigation continues, updates will be shared as new information becomes available.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with remote mining operations. Stay tuned for further developments on this story as it unfolds.
