Flames Stun Oilers with 4-3 Comeback Win in Season Opener

UPDATE: In a thrilling season opener, the Calgary Flames staged a stunning comeback from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in a shootout on October 8, 2025. The decisive goal came from Nazem Kadri in the eighth round of the shootout, spoiling the Oilers’ home opener at Rogers Place.
The Flames, seeking redemption after narrowly missing the playoffs last season, showed resilience as they rallied back, scoring four unanswered goals. Rookie Matvei Gridin, who made his NHL debut, found the net alongside Blake Coleman and Connor Zary, with Kadri also contributing an assist.
The game took a dramatic turn when the Oilers, who had taken a commanding lead, faltered. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tallied a goal and two assists, while Leon Draisaitl scored his 400th career NHL goal. The Oilers had initially surged ahead with a power play goal, but the momentum shifted quickly in the third period.
The turning point came just 40 seconds into the third when Flames defenseman Dustin Wolf capitalized on a crucial error by Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner. Skinner mishandled a bouncing puck, allowing Coleman to score and tie the game.
In a moment of celebration, Oilers captain Connor McDavid received a thunderous ovation from fans during player introductions, marking the significance of his recent two-year contract extension. McDavid’s decision to take a lower salary cap hit of US$12.5 million per year was a strategic move aimed at bolstering the team’s chances for a Stanley Cup.
The Flames’ victory marks a historic start to their season, as they aimed to join an elite group of teams with four consecutive season-openers scoring five or more goals. Though they fell short, the win against their rivals adds a significant boost to their confidence.
Looking ahead, the Flames will face the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, while the Oilers will host the Canucks on Saturday. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as both teams continue their quests for victory in this pivotal NHL season.
This report highlights the resilient spirit of the Flames and the competitive nature of the Oilers, setting the stage for a captivating season ahead.
