UPDATE: A heartfelt memorial for Aubrey John Millard took place on April 10, 2025, at the North Channel Yacht Club in Elliot Lake, following his passing from cancer on April 7. Family and friends gathered to honor the life of this beloved sailor and community member, highlighting his passion and dedication to both the water and his fellow citizens.

The ceremony unfolded as a touching tribute, with attendees making the journey to Spragge, located just west of Elliot Lake. Despite initial forecasts of rain, guests enjoyed a dry drive to the yacht club, where they celebrated Aubrey’s life amidst the scenic beauty of the North Channel, a place he cherished for its breathtaking views and sailing adventures.

Aubrey, who was born on July 19, 1938, had a remarkable legacy. He dedicated 38 years to military service as a Lieutenant Commander (Ret’d) and was deeply involved in the community through various volunteer efforts, including transporting patients to medical appointments and supporting hospice care at their local hospital.

“Aubrey was an upstanding man. He had enthusiasm and loved to share his experiences,” said Sorren Warkander, Aubrey’s nephew, who traveled from Berkley, California for the memorial.

During the ceremony, members of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans (ANAVETS) Branch 108 Vimy Ridge conducted a ceremonial rifle salute as the haunting sound of a bugle lament filled the air. Richard Wayne Golden, team organizer from Massey, noted the significance of the event, stating, “We usually have seven members out for events like this.”

Judy Millard, Aubrey’s wife, received a Canadian flag in honor of her late husband as their sailboat, Veleda IV, passed by in tribute. The couple had been active members of the yacht club for about 14 years and were known for mentoring younger sailors, leaving a lasting impact on the sailing community.

“When they came back from Europe, they helped a lot of the younger guys… staunch, they were great with the beginning sailors,” recalled Paul Patterson, Rear Commodore of the North Channel Yacht Club.

Aubrey’s legacy extends beyond sailing; he was known for his generosity and willingness to help others. He and Judy were known to frequently assist fellow community members, exemplifying their commitment to service and support.

As friends and family reflected on Aubrey’s life, they shared fond memories, including sailing trips and gatherings that showcased his adventurous spirit. “If you see something painted green at the club, it likely was Aubrey who did it,” said fellow sailor Tom Baader, emphasizing the camaraderie they shared on the water.

The Milestones of Aubrey’s life serve as a reminder of the impact one individual can have on their community. The North Channel Yacht Club will forever hold the memories of Aubrey Millard, a man who loved the sea and the people around him.

For those wishing to honor Aubrey’s memory, Judy Millard has planned a second gathering for the scattering of his ashes this summer, promising to keep the spirit of his love for sailing alive.

This touching remembrance highlights not only the loss felt by many but also the connections forged through shared passions and community involvement. More details about the upcoming scattering ceremony will be announced closer to the date.
