BCGEU Strike Escalates: 11 Ministries Hit, 25,000 Workers Affected
UPDATE: The British Columbia General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) has escalated its job action, with a total of 11 ministries and Crown corporations fully struck as of October 9, 2023. This strike impacts over 25,000 public service workers and is expected to significantly disrupt public services across the province.
The union warns that the effects of these strikes will be felt immediately, and 475 worksites are currently affected. While essential services are being maintained where legally required, BCGEU representatives indicate that further escalation is possible if the government does not resume negotiations.
Service BC locations are completely closed, leaving many residents without access to critical services such as driver’s licensing. The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) has stepped in to fill some service gaps, moving road testing services to nearby claim centres. However, services like knowledge testing and driver licence renewals remain unavailable at all Service BC locations.
A statement from ICBC highlights their efforts to contact impacted customers and redirect services. “Our team is working diligently to ensure road tests are conducted wherever possible,” an ICBC spokesperson stated.
Moreover, local bars and restaurants are feeling the strain of the strike, as they cannot purchase liquor from BC Liquor Stores, which are also closed due to the BCGEU actions. Patty Gettison, manager of BX Pub, expressed that they have only a few weeks of liquor supply left. “We stocked up a bit, knowing that this might happen,” she said. “But you can only stock up so much.”
Gettison further noted that the strike is expected to alter customer behavior. “Once you interrupt their habits, they change,” she added, highlighting the potential long-term impact on local businesses.
The situation remains fluid, and residents are urged to stay informed regarding service availability and potential further developments. For ongoing updates about ICBC service impacts, visit: ICBC’s official page.
As negotiations between the BCGEU and the provincial government remain stalled, the public will be watching closely for any announcements that could signal a resolution or further escalation in this critical labor dispute.
