Heritage Apples Make a Splash at Derby Reach Parks Day

UPDATE: Heritage apples took center stage at the Derby Reach Parks Day in Langley, where visitors discovered the rich history of these unique fruits. Just announced, the event showcased apples that have been growing since as early as the 1830s, inviting families to engage with nature and history through hands-on activities and guided walks.
Volunteer Reese Irwin highlighted her favorite apple, the “little mysteries,” found on a towering tree near the trailhead. “We don’t know what kind of apples they are,” Irwin stated, “but they’re very tiny and very tasty.” This annual event, presented by the Derby Reach/Brae Island Parks Association, celebrates the almost-forgotten heritage apples that are part of the local ecosystem.
The event was held at 10716 Allard Crescent, allowing visitors to learn about the significance of heritage apples and the surrounding Langley Bog. Irwin explained that cuttings from heritage trees along the Port to Port Trail were grafted onto new orchard trees, which are thriving in the Derby Reach Heritage Park area.
For the first time, the event offered additional parking across the street due to overwhelming attendance. Joakim Nilsson, board chair of the Derby Reach Brae Island Parks Association, confirmed, “It’s a very popular park on a Saturday, so we now have event parking available across the street.”
The day included fun, family-friendly activities and opportunities for guided walks to the viewing platform, drawing in people from across the community. Other organizations involved in this celebration included the Metro Vancouver Parks Association, Langley Field Naturalists, Langley Environmental Partnership Society, and the Langley Historical Society.
As the event continues to grow in popularity, attendees left with a newfound appreciation for the heritage apples and their connection to the area’s history. This celebration not only supports local agriculture but also fosters community connection, making it a must-visit event for those interested in environmental sustainability and local heritage.
Stay tuned for more updates as Derby Reach Parks Day unfolds, and discover the hidden treasures of Langley’s natural beauty and history.
