Ligue 1 club AS Monaco has officially appointed coach Sébastien Pocognoli from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise. This decision follows the dismissal of Adi Hütter just one day earlier, marking a significant shift for the club as they seek a turnaround in their current season.

Pocognoli, a former Belgian international who made 13 appearances as a left back, signed a contract that extends until June 2027. His recent success at Union Saint-Gilloise, where he led the team to its first league title in 90 years, has generated optimism among the Monaco fans. During his tenure, the team secured the championship last season, showcasing Pocognoli’s ability to guide a team to success.

Despite Hütter’s previous achievements, including second and third-place finishes in the last two seasons, Monaco’s performance this season has been underwhelming. Currently, the club sits in fifth place after seven matches, having earned only one point from two Champions League fixtures, which included a heavy 4-1 defeat against Belgian rivals Club Brugge.

Monaco’s struggles can be attributed to an imbalance in their performance, with the team boasting the highest goal tally in Ligue 1 at 16 goals but also conceding 12 goals, ranking them among the league’s worst defenses. Pocognoli faces the challenge of stabilizing the team’s defensive strategies while maintaining their attacking prowess.

The club’s next match is scheduled against Angers on October 21, where Pocognoli will be eager to make an immediate impact and set the tone for his tenure. As AS Monaco aims to reclaim its status as a top contender in French football, the appointment of Pocognoli represents a bold move to reinvigorate the team’s ambitions.
