BREAKING: The City of Cambridge has officially approved the construction of a new paramedic station at the site of the former Kinsmen Children’s Centre. During an urgent council meeting on October 25, 2023, the Region of Waterloo’s councillors voted to redevelop the property located at 651 Concession Road.

This new facility aims to enhance the response times of Paramedic Services for all of Cambridge and the southern Region of Waterloo. Designed to accommodate up to six ambulances simultaneously, the station is expected to significantly improve emergency medical services in the area.

The projected capital cost of the station stands at $12.6 million, with plans for it to be operational by late 2027. The Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services employs a centralized deployment model, allowing resources to be allocated based on various factors, such as time of day, call volumes, and staff workloads.

Regional Councillor and Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic voiced concerns during the meeting, expressing the need for the project to move forward in a timely yet fiscally responsible manner. He stated, “I believe the new ambulance station needs to be built and want to support it, but I believe it needs to move forward in not only a timely, but also a fiscally responsible manner.”

Vrbanovic also urged consideration for collaborative options, mentioning potential partnerships with Cambridge Fire and the inclusion of community services like housing or daycare. He emphasized, “I don’t believe I have the information necessary to demonstrate that sufficient due diligence was done to consider the pursuit of these options.”

As the community awaits the development of this crucial facility, the discourse highlights an ongoing tension between immediate emergency service needs and the long-term vision of multi-use community spaces.

With this decision, Cambridge takes a significant step toward improving its emergency response capabilities, but discussions around the broader implications of single-use facilities continue.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story and its impact on the local community.
