Brandon School Division’s Mathew Gustafson Announces Retirement

Mathew Gustafson, the superintendent of the Brandon School Division, has announced his retirement, effective August 7, 2026. This decision was revealed during a board meeting on Tuesday night, where board chair Linda Ross shared Gustafson’s resignation letter.
In his letter, Gustafson expressed that stepping down from his role as superintendent and CEO was a difficult decision. He reflected on his tenure, stating, “I am honoured to have been able to serve the students, parents, and staff of the Brandon School Division since 2002.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration and professionalism among his colleagues throughout his career.
Gustafson joined the Brandon School Division in 2002 and has held various positions in senior administration for over a decade. He became superintendent in early 2021. His decision to retire in 2026 aims to provide the board ample time to identify and appoint a successor.
In an interview following the board meeting, Gustafson shared, “At a certain point, even when you enjoy what you do, it’s time to step aside and let someone else take over. This allows me to do some different things and still support education in other ways.”
The superintendent expressed hope that his leadership has fostered positive experiences for students and staff. “What matters most is that students have good memories of their time in school, and that I’ve played even a small role in helping make that possible,” he added.
Gustafson also mentioned plans to remain active in the community post-retirement. He humorously noted, “I might be helping my brother-in-law run the combine in the fall, but I also hope to volunteer and maybe stay involved in education in some way.”
During the meeting, Ross praised Gustafson for his commitment and steady leadership. “I’d like to thank Mathew for all his years of service and the amazing job he has done as superintendent. It has been a pleasure working with you, and we’re very appreciative,” she stated, adding a light-hearted comment about her mixed feelings regarding his resignation.
Deputy chair Duncan Ross commended Gustafson as a “steadfast rock of competency,” highlighting his reliability and dedication throughout his tenure. Trustee Kim Fallis remarked on Gustafson’s preparedness, noting, “Your main goal has always been the success of parents and students in BSD, and that dedication has shown in everything you’ve done.”
As the Brandon School Division prepares for this transition, Gustafson’s legacy of leadership will undoubtedly leave an impact on the community he has served for more than two decades.
